Lionel Separate Sale Tender at York

Lionel 265W Tender

Outfit 265 TW box (bottom) contained two smaller boxes - the larger with the 265W tender (top left box) and the smaller with the whistle controller (No. 66 label).

In 1935 Lionel announced with great enthusiasm:

"Now Lionel introduced the most spectacular development in model railroading - the AUTHENTIC LOCOMOTIVE WHISTLE" - as part of selected sets (outfits). In 1936 Lionel offered the whistle tender for separate sale.

For many years I wondered how to identify the separate sale whistle tender?

At October 2018 York I learned the answer. Stan Slade brought an original packaged whistle outfit box with contents.

No. 814R Refrigerator with Brass Plates

No. 814R Refrigerator with ivory sides, blue roof, aluminum painted frame and brass plates.

Enlarged brass plate.

Lionel updated its freight car line in 1935 with new, brighter colors and shiny aluminum or nickel plates replacing brass plates. Collectors have found a few 810-820 series cars in the new, brighter colors yet with the brass plates of the earlier series.

Glenn Bryer brought an 814R Refrigerator with the older ivory paint and brass plates with the later gray frame and blue roof. Likely Lionel had assembled ivory bodies with brass plates and added the later frame and roof.
